Weekend Match Report – Women’s Team

4th May, 2011

After a long pre-season the ladies first round had finally arrived and a road trip down the F6 to meet local rivals Wollongong was in order in what we all thought were going to be poor conditions. Upon arriving at the destination the girls were surprised to see a ground in almost perfect conditions and the weather much the same, just right for a ripping game of footy.

The first quarter saw the Power play into a slight breeze which would give Wollongong a 1 to 2 goal advantage, but with a strong last line of defence lead by Chipie and Rosey the Saints only managed a solitary point while some hard running from the midfield lead by Nell saw the Power put on 2 goals.

The second quarter saw a different game plan as coach Cheyno asked the girls to use the wind as much as they could which meant a lot of long kicks and using the space on the wings. The Power managed to put another 2 goals on the board, while the hard working half back line lead by Captain Huggies and Vice Captain Colesy only let Wollongong have 1 shot on goal which ended in another point.

Spirits were high at the long break but all players knew the job was only half done and that they would have to work twice as hard this quarter because the breeze had pick up.

The Ladies came out firing in the third quarter putting on 2 quick goals but Wollongong weren’t going down without a fight scoring a goal themselves and taking the momentum way from the Power.

At the three quarter time speech Cheyno put it to the ladies giving them 2 choices, work hard for the next 10 minutes and break the game open or slog it out for the next 20 minutes. The ladies chose the first option and within the first 5 minutes the game was the Powers!!!!! Hard running from the on ballers of Pops, Dom, Amy and Jenna saw plenty of quality opportunities for our forwards and they didn’t let the team down.

With the game sewn up midway through the final quarter it was time for some party tricks, with Kenny running a muck, Loz potting a goal from the boundary, Vice Captain Bec Lukas with all the space in the world to lead into and Ash going for torps from 50 out. But what whipped the peanut gallery into a frenzy was Charlotte’s first goal in afl footy. By the sound of the final siren the ladies had 14 shots on goal in the last quarter scoring 8 goals and 6 behinds for a tally of 54 final quarter points to run away with a landslide victory 94 to 10 and see the Power sit on top of the SWAFL ladder!

Best on ground were Kenny, Jenna, Pops, Nell, Ash and Big Bek, with special mentions to Huggies, Colesy and Alex who i dare say is the youngest Shark / Power player to don a senior’s guernsey at the age of just 14.

Goal kickers for the day were Bec Lukas (4), Ash (3), Brit (2) and singles to Loz, Kenny, Charlotte, Nikki and Amy.

Remember to get to training as there is still plenty more we need to learn.
