1st Grade vs North Shore

On Saturday morning the Southern Power team eked out a win against the North Shore Bombers. The game was closely fought out for the majority of the game before the Power were able to sneak away in the last quarter to record an 80 – 52 win. Despite the sunshine and still conditions the ground was very heavy under foot after overnight rain and early in the game both teams suffered from this as getting a handle on the ball was proving difficult.

The first quarter saw the Power get out of the blocks well with the highlight of the quarter been Marshall’s running goal from 50m out on the boundary line. 2 other goals and some tight defence saw the Power hold a 20 – 7 lead at quarter time.

The Bombers hit back in the second quarter kicking 3 straight to the Power’s 1 goal to Holdsy to narrow the margin to just 3 points at half time. For the Power, Matty Graham was again playing well controlling the centre of the ground . Holdsy was causing the Bomber defence problems in the forward line and Milky was toiling away in the ruck.

The third quarter saw several lead changes as the game was in the balance. However 3 goals late in the quarter to the Power saw them take a handy lead into three quarter time. Al, who was well held all day kicked a couple of important goals as did Cluffy. Without been dominant the Power were able to get the ball forward enough to create these chances and with Cookie rebounding everything that was coming into the Power defensive 50 the Power were able to get out to a 54 – 37 lead at three quarter time.

The final quarter saw the Power kick the first few goals as Al grabbed another one and Cluffy and Holdsy also goaled to seal the match before the halfway point of the quarter.

Phil and Clarkey (against his brother) were good performers all day for the Power but it was MG who was given best on ground for his efforts across the middle.

The final score finished 12.8.80 to 8.4.52 with the Power doing enough to keep their winning streak going. Best players were MG, Holdsy and Cookie and the major goal kickers were Al, Holdsy and Cluffy all kicking 3.

2nd Grade vs North Shore

Reserve grade had the very early start of 8.30 am with players needing to leave in the dark to make it on time. Confidence was high for the Power who with a very strong team on paper were coming up against a North Shore side with just 1 win to their name for the season. It was quite wet to start the game and this helped North Shore with their bigger bodies keep the ball locked in tight and not allow the Power’s running players to get the ball in space. Despite this North Shore would not record a goal until the dying minutes as the Power continued to score.

The first quarter saw Josh grab a couple of goals as the Power took a 12-1 lead.

A rev up by coach Roe at quarter time saw the Power come out with much more purpose in the second quarter putting on 5.6 to nothing for the quarter. Highlights were goals to Paul Johnson as well as a couple to big Troy in his return from America. Trent was playing well in the centre along with Ian who dominated in the ruck for the majority of the game. Marksy was also showing a great pair of hands marking everything coming in his direction as if it was bone dry. The Power led by 48 – 1 at half time and the game was over unless North Shore could show something they previously hadn’t.

Having lost Leon early in the game captain Nick Noonan showed the players how to go about the game regularly beating 2 or 3 defenders single handedly to get the ball and providing inspiration for the rest of the team. Following this the Power were able to kick 4 goals for the quarter whilst again keeping the Bombers scoreless. Lyndon got in on the act kicking a few goals and with Tongs and Duane controlling the game through the centre the North Shore heads dropped.

The final quarter saw all the sting out of the game and players from both sides were going through the motions, however this did not really matter as the game was well and truly over as a contest.

The final score finished Southern Power 14.11.95 beating North Shore 1.1.7. Best for the Power were Marksy, Nick and Ian whilst the major goal kickers were Josh and Lyndon with 3 each and Troy with 2.
