Power go down in nailbiter

22nd September, 2011

Last weekend the Southern Power 1st Grade side was just 10 points away from a maiden Division 1 premiership. Manly jumped the Power at the start and put on 4 quick goals in the opening quarter to establish a lead that the Power could ultimately never real in. After a low scoring second quarter where the Power worked themselves back into the contest it was all the Power in the premiership quarter but despite have 6 scoring shots only one of those was a major. Despite this the Power were only 7 points down at the final change and the boys threw everything at Manly in the last quarter and got to within 1 point ensuring a tense final 10 minutes. Unfortunately Manly consolidated with a couple of goals to run out 7.13-55 to 6.9-45 winners. There were many courageous performances on the day including Cookie who spoiled with tenacity over and over. Youngy was voted the Power’s best on ground while Youngy, Shane and Clarkey kept the scoreboard ticking over with 2 goals each.

Despite the loss the players and coaching staff can hold their heads up high after making the Division 1 Grand Final in the club’s debut season at this level. To jump up a division from last year and go within 10 points of claiming another premiership is an amazing feat and it bodes well for the future.
