Power off to perfect start in 2011

4th April, 2011

The Power got off to a perfect start in 2011 with all 4 mens sides recording victories over the weekend.

Ressies got the season off to a great start early (very) on Saturday morning when they were too good for Western Suburbs. Despite dominating around the ground for most of the match they weren’t able to break away from the gritty Magpies but still managed to record a 35 point victory. New players Wardy, Josh, Nick Miller and Andrew Cluff all impressed in their first game for the club while Macca, Poo & Harley all had good games. Josh led the way up forward kicking 4 goals.

Following the Ressies the 1st Grade side played their first ever game in Division 1 when they also took on Wests. Despite a less than ideal warm up (Hamer taking a gut slide and new recruit Jake Hardy doing an ankle and being withdrawn from the match) the team started well with plenty of run and kicked a 5 goal to nil term to set up a nice lead by quarter time. The 2nd quarter again saw the Power have a bad run with captain Hamer and MG forced to the sidelines while Wests clawed their way back into the match. Despite a depleted bench in the 2nd half the Power regained the ascendancy in the 3rd term with the aid of the breeze and never looked like being headed winning by 64 points. The win was a great way to welcome the new guys to the club who all played great games in particular Shane, Matt and Eners and set the season up. Al kicked 4 goals while Tails seemed to relish playing on the flank and played his best game for the club and Milky battled well in the ruck.

Sunday saw the final 2 matches for the Power for the weekend when they hosted Balmain in the Challenge Cup and Sydney Uni in the 3rds. After the Power started well away early in the match the Dockers clawed their way back midway through the 2nd half but the boys kicked away late to record an 18 point victory. There were some very promising signs from the boys throughout the day with good ball movement and with a bit more fitness the 18’s will be a real force in 2011.George kicked 3 great goals while Matt Young and Maddis Bishop played great games through the middle.

The final match of the weekend saw the 3rds take on Sydney Uni and the Power were in control from the outset. Coach Libba was at his bullocking best kicking 4 goals to set up the win while there were handy contributions all round the ground. Again there were some new faces who impressed including Trent Alexander, Mark Piatti, Damon Breadan and Ian Cross while there was a new ‘cult hero’ unearthed in the form of Stephen ‘The Rig’ Becker who is a player to watch / avoid if you are an opposition player in 2011. Solid contributions also from regulars Sterlo, Ox and Jimmy Perrett saw the 3rds start the season off perfectly to record an 86-60 victory.

Round 2 is at home this weekend where we face some very tough matches as we host East Coast in all grades apart from Division 5 where we host Moorebank. Being the first full home game of the year we will also unveil the Division Two Premiership Flag prior to the First Grade game.
