Craigys brother in law has been organising a charity bike ride from Sydney to Canberra over 2 days in March.

The 1st day they are riding from Moorebank to Goulburn which is 170 kms and the 2nd day from Goulburn to Canberra and back out to Sutton which is 110 kms.

The reason for this ride is because in September 2011 Criagys brother in laws best friend and his wife (Graham and Nadine) lost their baby boy Cameron at 38 weeks.

The name of the ride is Sydney 2 CAMberra in Cameron’s honour.

The ride is to raise awareness of Stillbirth and support those families that are devastated when they lose their unborn child. SIDS and KIDS NSW have also been offering free counselling and support to people who lose their children through Stillbirth and SIDS for years. For this reason all monies raised will be donated evenly to SIDS and KIDS NSW and the Stillbirth Foundation of Australia.

Now it is time to reach out to try to raise some funds for this worthy cause. Any donations however big or small are much appreciated as they try and help those affected by Stillbirth and SIDS.

The below link is to the fundraising page.

http://www.everydayhero.com.au/lee_heslehurst

Your support is appreciated.

The preseason has once again come around with a blink of an eye.

As we end 2011 and prepare for the 2012 assault, there are many exiting initiatives both immediate, and longer term that makes the future here at the Power extremely positive.

The club has lodged its Development Application with Sutherland Council to not only upgrade the playing surface at Waratah Oval Sutherland but to also build a new club house for what will be the Power’s new home ground. This will be another important step in the continued growth, evolution and development of this very young club. These are exciting times. The Power has a plan and together with you is going places.

The Power‘s Executive Committee comprised of passionate AFL stalwarts, is constantly driving improvements at every level and facet of this Football Club. The Club is very lucky to have an EC who are prepared – as with the players on field, to put in the hard yards off the field. The Brian Cairnduff Scholarship to the best U16’s player at each junior club is another example of its commitment to continue to grow the club.

Last year the U18’s fielded a predominantly young side. All of those first year players (excluding those moving interstate and back overseas) will be returning giving us a great deal of depth and experience at senior footy level. There is also an extremely positive stream of players joining the Power from the various U16’s clubs which will also significantly bolster numbers, making 2012 look very, very exciting.

The pre season has commenced and it is pleasing to see a number of U18’s – both new and old chafing at the bit to get the footy season up and running proper. I am aware that there are competing demands for your time and as a club the Power will do whatever it can to support your participation in the footy club.

There is no doubt that the preseason is the most important part of the season.

It not only lays the foundation for your individual performance, but that of team. Furthermore, a solid preseason is a critical component in the prevention of injuries – something we all want to avoid.

There are a number of exciting initiatives the club will be instigating this year particularly in the pre season and this will be communicated to you as the preseason unfolds. These are more positive steps the club is making as it moves towards adopting a more professional approach to the way footy is played at the Power without compromising the great culture it has built since its inception. I look forward to working with you to achieve the goals you will have.

Finally I end with one of my favorite quotation from Calvin Coolidge 30th President of the USA.

“Nothing in the world can take place of persistence. Talent will not; nothing is more common than unsuccessful men with talent. Genius will not; unrewarded genius is almost a proverb. Education will not; the world is full of educated derelicts. Persistence and determination alone are omnipotent.”

Avio Scotti
U18′s Coach – 2012

The Southern Power AFC is pleased to announce all coaching positions for the 2012 season.

Simon Closter and Rod Craig have been reappointed as coaches of the 1st Grade side after a successful 2011 which saw the side make it all the way to the Grand Final in their first year in Division One. Closter and Craig will be looking to build on the good year and go one step further in 2012.

The Reserve Grade side will have a new coach for 2012 with Rick Eddington taking over the reigns. Rick has recently moved to the area from Victoria and we are really looking forward to his input in 2012. Rick has impressed since his initial interview and has very similar goals and ideas that the Power harbours which bodes well for a successful partnership for hopefully many seasons to come. Rick himself played football in Victoria for Rye, Rosebud, Sorrento, Powerhouse and Toorak and since hanging up the boots has coached for over 10 years, most recently coaching the Rosebud and Rye Under 18 sides in the Mornington Peninsula League. Rick was also the Vice President of the Mornington Peninsula League for a number of years as well as the Vice President at Rye Football Club. Rick is excited about the challenge of coaching at the Power and is encouraged by the drive and motivation of those at the helm of the Club, “I am really looking forward to the season getting started and meeting all the players and club supporters, building a good rapport with the team, committee and bonding with the senior group.” Rick’s philosophy on football is very close to that of the Power and we warmly welcome him to the Power.

We would like to particularly acknowledge the efforts of Cameron Roe over the past couple of seasons who unselfishly put his hand up to coach the Reserves, sometimes to his own detriment, and did so with excellent results, highlighted by the fact the side returned to finals action in his first year as coach and then this year saw them fall just short of a Preliminary final. Roey, a life member of the club, will now be able to concentrate on playing only (assuming his body lasts another preseason).

Cheyne Anderson has been appointed as the 3rd Grade coach following a very successful year coaching the Women’s team last season. Cheyne previously coached the 3rd Grade side in 2010 and will be looking to build on the success of 2011 which saw the side claim the Division Five premiership.

In the Under 18’s, Avio Scotti will be continuing on as coach after a successful first season. Avio is very excited about the year ahead with some much needed depth headed his way. Avio is passionate about making the Power Under 18’s a real success which is very important to the future of the Club. Rhys Vance will be assisting Avio again this season and the Power is excited about the sides chances in 2012 under their watchful eye.

We would also like to thank Rod Loxley for his valuable contribution to the Under 18’s team last season. Rod reluctantly took on the co coaching role last season and his effort is very much appreciated. Rod remains on the Southern Power committee for 2012 and will more than likely throw the boots on from time to time.

The Women’s coach for 2012 will be Brad Cavanagh who will take over the reigns from Cheyne Anderson. Significant improvement has been shown by the women’s team the past 2 years and Brad will be looking to build on this and have his troops once again play in the top tier of the womens Sydney AFL.

he Club would like to welcome the 2012 coaching staff and we look forward to a hugely successful year under their guidance. All coaches will be at preseason training starting Tuesday 22nd November so make sure you make yourself known to them.

Most grades are still seeking assistants and team manager so if you think this is something you might like to be involved with please contact the coaches.

Southern Power celebrated one of their most successful seasons on and off the field ever last week at a gala awards dinner at Kareela Golf Club attended by 150 players, sponsors and guests.

The Power not only toasted the club’s Division 5 premiership and good results by their other four sides, there was a toast to the successful lodgement of the development application for new facilities at Waratah Oval which will see the Power move to the Premier Division-quality facilities by 2013.

In the clubs first ever season in Division One, the Power’s top side stepped up and made the Grand Final and it was no surprise to learn that one of the Power’s most consistent in that game, Matt Graham, was awarded the club best and fairest award over the course of the season. MG, now a veteran among the very young Power side, stepped up to the higher level admirably showing the leadership and ability that earned him the club best and fairest award. The award was MG’s second best and fairest in a row after sharing the trophy with Phil Hamer in 2010.

Club favourite Graham Enright finished runner up in the best and fairest and was voted player’s player while towering backman Adam Cook was awarded the Most Courageous.

In Division 3, Trent Alexander and Andrew Cluff shared the player’s while Alexander won the best and fairest while in Division 5, Daniel Stanton took the player’s player, best and fairest double.

Maddis Bishop was a runaway winner in the Under 18s best and fairest count while in the women’s Louise Glasgow took out the best and fairest and Jenna Miller shared the player’s player with Amy Kowski.

In recognition of decades of service to AFL in the Sutherland Shire, the Power has renamed their volunteer awards the Brian Cloney Clubman of the Year award and Lorraine Cloney Clubwoman of the Year award. The men’s winner was Andrew Cluff who lived and breathed the Power spirit every week turning up early to training and game days, helping to run water or boundary at the drop of a hat. The women’s award went to Bek Lukas who has been the heart of successful women’s AFL in Sydney’s South for years. Bek, along with running her own business and being a mother of three commits a lot of her spare time to the Power.

For his tireless work around the club and managing the women’s team, Dave Bell was named Volunteer of the Year.
