Southern Power Call to Arms Day – this Saturday

28th July, 2011

One in two men will be diagnosed with cancer by age 85.
It could be you.
It could be your best mate.

This Saturday July 30, you have a chance to do something about it!

On Saturday the Southern Power in conjunction with Call to Arms and The Cancer Council will be tackling cancer head on.

On the day first grade players will don a specially designed guernsey against the Illawarra Lions.

That Guernsey will represent both the club and the fight against cancer on what should be a huge day of footy at ‘Fortress Gwawley’.

The Guernseys are one-off pieces and to further help Call to Arms and the Cancer Council they will be auctioned off the following week at the Powers River Cruise with part of the proceeds going directly to The Cancer Council to assist in the research, earlier diagnosis and new treatments for cancer.

During the afternoon players will also be walking around the ground with a bucket whereby spectators can donate to this worthy cause so please give generously.

Club President Simon Davies knows the importance of raising awareness for a cause such as this hopes that the Power community will get right behind the day by digging deep.

“Being part of a football club unfortunately it is almost inevitable that cancer will be an opponent that several of these young men will face later in their lives. The Power is proud to play a small part in the great campaign run by Call to Arms,” Davies said

“Many people don’t realise that although the rate of cancer in men is extremely high, almost one third of cancer is preventable through healthy lifestyle choices. The most important thing you can do is make sure you get a regular checkup!”

“Much like a football game, cancer can present some tough opposition, but like any opposition, it can be beaten with attributes we would normally associate with our football club – teamwork, effort and determination”

So make sure you get along to the day festivities as well as the River Cruise on the ‘majestic’ Georges River the following Saturday night (which also see’s the draw of the 2011 major raffle) and bid for the Guernsey you want the most to drive up the money we raise for a worthy cause.
