Friday Flashback – Matt Nixon

13th June, 2014

matt nixon FFName: Matt Nixon
Nickname: Nicko
Seasons played with Power/Sharks: 2008 – 2010
Position Played: Back Flank (Should have played forward Simo – wasted talent!)

In your time at the club what were your personal highlights?
Nicko: During my few years with the Power the club enjoyed a lot of success across all grades and the opportunity to play finals is always a big highlight for me (though the fact that I managed to dodge all the Premierships is a concern!) Beating Manly on their home turf in front of their delightful spectators was always enjoyable!

Being elected as the outright champion of “Robbo Toss” through sheer volume of attempts at all social functions also ranks highly.

Were there any significant changes to the club or league during your time?
Nicko:
I was present during the period in which the Sharks changed their name to the Power and went about successfully redefining the Club’s image and attracting sponsorship etc. A lot of people put in a huge amount of effort and it was great to be a part of. I can see today that the hard work continues with the current committee and staff which is great.

What does it mean to you to be a past player, coach, committee member of the Power/Sharks?
Nicko:
Moving to Sydney from Perth and knowing absolutely no-one was made easy by being involved with a great footy club. I still follow all the Power results and even managed to fly back over for the 2013 Premiership which was excellent. In a few short years I made some lifelong mates.

Any words for the current members and supporters?
Nicko:
There are plenty of great teams out there but it takes a lot to make a great club such as the Power, don’t underestimate the contribution you make as a member and supporter.
Also, a wise man once taught me about the importance of always carrying an “emergency shirt”…everyone should take this valuable advice on board!
